Future of "Big Red Ride Home"

It's been a fixture on Austin streets for six weeks. But it's days might be numbered.

If you live in Austin, you've probably seen the big red bus drive through town; its mission: to provide safe and sober transportation.  Since December 21, 2011 Derek Mc-Cormack's Big Red Ride Home has been making a four-night-a-week circuit of Austin's bars, offering free rides home.

"For the last 30 days I've supported this out of my own pocket, with the intention of compiling rider data," says McCormack.

"We're transporting roughly 100 people a week."

Austin bars helped pay some of the cost of running the bus, but cost has become an issue.  So Mc-Cormack is making a plea for help.

"We've generated a petition asking the city council to provide us with the ability to get this bus funded," says McCormack.

A decision is expected in couple of weeks on whether the Big Red Ride Home will continue to operate in Austin.
