Mower County Business Owner Fined by MPCA

Mower County Business Owner Fined by MPCA

The owner of a gravel mining business in Mower County must pay a $19,000 fine to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.  He is accused of violating solid waste laws by disposing of concrete, plastic and other materials in ponds at his gravel pit facility.

Lawrence Hansen owns and operates the business near Rose Creek.

In addition to paying the penalty, Hansen has closed the areas where he buried the materials on his property, as ordered by the MPCA.  Also required of him, covering the ponds with soil and controlling runoff from rain and snowmelt to prevent pollution of ground and surface waters.

The MPCA says Hansen allegedly violated state law for several years by operating a solid-waste facility without a permit, creating the potential to pollute surface water and groundwater.

An MPCA inspection in August 2010 found three areas of buried concrete, rebar, asphalt, plastic, treated wood and tractor tires.

Mosquito Spraying

Mosquito Spraying

Residents in Austin get a big boost in the battle against those pesky mosquitos.

City crews will be applying a ground application and spray on Tuesday, June 28th.

They will begin at 8:00 p.m. and continue through the night.

The chemical will kill adult mosquitos but is safe for people, pets and plants.

Horse Attacked

A group of people near Austin are trying to figure out if it was a cougar that attacked their horses, it happened northwest of town last week.

We are told one horse had a limp, gashes and missing hair.

The man who boards the horses says he's certain it was a cougar because whatever it was would've had to jump a fence to get inside the pen.

The DNR isn't so sure but still hasn't determined what caused the horses injuries.
